At a young age (nobody knows exactly when as there was no social media) I remember writing in a book at the side of 𝙖𝙢𝙗𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 – ‘to be in the olympics’. Only I recall vividly that I didn’t spell it correctly & that memory has stayed with me ever since.
I was mesmerised by Los Angeles 84 (I know most of you weren’t born) where the likes of Cram and Coe were dominating middle distance & by the time Seoul 88 came along (I know, you weren’t born) & my local hero Peter Elliott won Silver in the 1500m, I was already fully immersed in the world of athletics.
Despite a very ambitious ambition, I knew I was never going to make it to the Olympics. I was destined for smaller things at Rotherham Harriers & Athletics Club
Anyone who knew me back then will tell you I was pretty obsessed by running, despite not being the creme de la creme. Running & me parted for a number of years but for most of my life, has always been there on some sort of level, I think it always will be.
Would I have believed anyone if they had told me I would have the same love over 30 years on? Probably Running is pretty much an extension of me & I doubt it will ever go away fully but why would I want it to?
I’m Mum to a wonderfully EXTRAordinary young boy who happens to be autistic. By now lots of you will have met him which is brilliant because we’re cautious when meeting new people as I know sometimes people are unsure how to interact with him. He hates running but he loves coming to track and is now our fabulous race starter every Tuesday
